Avilamycin 8% is a veterinary medication primarily used to control bacterial enteric infections in various animals, including chickens, turkeys, pigs, and rabbits. It is administered orally through their feed. Avilamycin belongs to the orthosomycin antibiotic complex produced by the fermentation of Streptomyces viridochromogenes. The fermentation product consists of one major factor, avilamycin A, and 15 minor factors. Avilamycin A constitutes at least 60% of the dried fermentation product, while avilamycin B is less than 18% (with the sum of avilamycin A and B being at least 70%). The other single factors make up less than 6%. Avilamycin inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing the formation of the mature 70S initiation complex. It has a unique binding site on the ribosome, resulting in no cross-resistance with other protein synthesis inhibitors. Avilamycin was previously authorized as a feed additive for growth promotion but was discontinued in the EU from January 2006. Its safety and efficacy make it a valuable tool in maintaining livestock health and productivity
