Calcipotriol is primarily used for the treatment of moderate plaque psoriasis in adults.
Calcipotriol is a synthetic analog of vitamin D.
It has comparable affinity with calcitriol (active vitamin D) for the Vitamin D receptor (VDR).
However, its activity in regulating calcium metabolism is less than 1% of calcitriol’s activity.
The VDR is found on various cell types, including T cells of the immune system.
Modulation of gene expression by binding calcipotriol to the VDR is believed to affect cell differentiation and proliferation, which plays a role in psoriasis.
