Cloprostenol Sodium is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin F₂α (PGF₂α). It acts as a potent luteolytic agent, meaning that within hours of administration, it causes the corpus luteum (a temporary endocrine structure in the ovary) to stop producing progesterone and gradually reduce in size over several days. This effect is utilized in veterinary medicine for two main purposes:
Inducing Estrus:
Cloprostenol Sodium is used to induce estrus (heat) in animals.
By disrupting progesterone production, it triggers the onset of the estrous cycle, making the animal receptive to mating.
This is particularly important for breeding purposes.
Abortion:
Cloprostenol Sodium can also cause abortion in animals.
When administered during pregnancy, it leads to the regression of the corpus luteum, which ultimately results in abortion.
This application is used when unwanted pregnancies need to be terminated.
