Ferric ammonium citrate, also known as ferric ammonium citrate or ammoniacal ferrous citrate, has the chemical formula [NH₄]₅[Fe(C₆H₄O₇)₂]. The iron in this compound is trivalent, and all three carboxyl groups and the central hydroxyl group of citric acid are deprotonated. A distinguishing feature of this compound is its high solubility in water, unlike ferric citrate, which is less soluble. Here are some uses of ferric ammonium citrate: Food Ingredient (INS Number 381) : It acts as an acidity regulator in food products. Scottish Beverage Irn-Bru : Notably used in the Scottish beverage Irn-Bru. Water Purification : Used for water purification. Reducing Agent : It can reduce metal salts of low activity, such as gold and silver. Photography : Part of the cyanotype photographic process. Microbiology : Used in Kligler’s Iron Agar (KIA) test to identify enterobacteriaceae bacteria based on their sugar metabolism and hydrogen sulfide production. Medical Imaging : Used as a contrast medium. Hematinic : Used to treat anemia.
